About this piece
back to topAn antique French terracotta lion sculpture by Mandeville & Bernier. Dating to circa 1900, this impressive lion sculpture is of good scale, its detailed mane, large paws, and expressive face boldly modelled in a rich terracotta. The deep orange colour with hints of brown only adds to its striking character.
In a seated stance, known in heraldry as sejant, this lion sculpture makes a handsome statue, ornament or sculpture in a garden or interior.
Mandeville & Bernier
Mandeville Pottery based in Castelnaudary (Aude) in the south of France was a famous company of its time. From 1880, the company evolved, using the name ‘Mandeville-Combeleran’ on its works. This was to be followed by ‘Mandeville-Bernier’ in 1905 until the company’s closure in 1935.
