About this piece
back to topThese mid 19th century antique encaustic tiles were reclaimed from a local Herefordshire church. We have around 125 tiles in the same design available, available for purchase in panels of 9 as pictured. Please enquire for more details.
Dating from the mid 19th century, these reclaimed encaustic tiles are by W. Godwin of Lugwardine, Herefordshire. They are of a neo-medieval style, made in buff and red terracotta colours, and each detailed with a flower to the centre surrounded by a circle and foliate corners.
Godwin Tiles
Though William Godwin began manufacturing quarry tiles, bricks and drainpipes at his factory in Lugwardine, Herefordshire in 1851, it wasn’t until 1852 that the firm began making encaustic floor tiles. Based on medieval prototypes, the tiles proved extremely popular and the business opened a second factory at Withington in 1863. In later years, William went into partnership with his son and traded as ‘Godwin & Co’, a name that would become reputable until long after William’s death in 1925.
