back to topA small antique stained glass hanging panel commemorating the coat of arms of William Juxon who was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1660 until 1663.
The stained glass sees a bordered central panel depicting a coat of arms detailed with four heads separated by a red cross. Below the armorial, a date reads ‘A.D. 1663’ which could be in reference to William Juxon’s death or jointly in reference to the completion of The Great Hall at Lambeth Palace which was rebuilt by Juxon in the 17th century.
The historic banqueting hall still exists to this day and features a rare late-Gothic oak hammer-beam roof, mimicking the old medieval original which was previously demolished.
Before becoming Archbishop, Juxon (1582-1663) served as Dean of Worcester and was nominated to See of Hereford, becoming Bishop of Hereford briefly before he was assigned as Bishop of London.
He had a strong connection with the monarchy. In fact, King Charles I regularly sought his advice and selected Juxon to offer him his last rites on the scaffold before his death in 1649.
