This striking obelisk has a centrally mounted ivory register with a malachite surround and a beautiful floral design in pietra dura, fitted with a mercury thermometer in Fahrenheit.

The unique method of pietra dura, meaning hardstone, refers to a Florentine mosaic technique, a descendant of the Roman era, sees carefully sawn pieces of gemstones fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle to form an image.
