About this piece

An antique A.W.N. Pugin glazed encaustic tile by W Godwin, Lugwardine, depicting a shield crest.

This 6 inch square tile is decorated with shells and a crossed surrounded by various shapes with inlaid buff clay on a deep red ground.

The gothic revival designer A.W.N. Pugin, responsible for this striking tile and others of its likeness, reputedly made drawings for tiles during his many journeys on the night train from London to Staffordshire, while engaged in works for the Earl of Shrewsbury.

This tile is a Pugin design for Alton Towers, Shrewsbury’s Seat, now making for a perfect decorative piece for display in a period cottage or townhouse looking to add style and charm.
