Basilius Besler

Basilius Besler (1561–1629) was a respected Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, best known for his monumental florilegium, the Hortus Eystettensis 1613. Taking over 16 years to complete, Besler’s work compiled and described the plants of the gardens of Bishop Johann Konrad von Gemmingen (1561-1612). Over 1084 species were depicted in artistic detail which stylistically reshaped botanical art.
