About this piece

A set of two 19th century Geramia Discanno hand coloured lithographs, captured from the walls of Pompeii. The frescoes are believed to be prints from a book published in 1890 by one of Italy’s oldest companies in the fine art sector, which still operates to this day. The original Negenborn and Bowinkel fine art store was founded in 1879, on Via Chiatamone, Naples.

These distinctive frescoes of Putti on black backgrounds are known as Piccoli Amorini, a series of works found in the Casa dei Vettii, one of the most impressive villas in Pompeii dating back to 62AD.

This collection consists of two framed frescoes of Putti undertaking skilled work such as flower arranging and construction. It is thought that the meaning of the works is to apply love to the craft.

Geramia Discanno (Italian, 1839-1907)

Discanno was an Italian painter, who collaborated with archaeologists and art historians to document the wall paintings in the Roman ruins of Pompeii. His striking attention to detail saved countless treasures from destruction and looting.

Between 1870 and 1872, Discanno created over fifty meticulous drawings of frescoes discovered in the newly excavated Pompeii which went on to be published in 1873.

We have additional sets of prints from this series under stock numbers: 36594, 37778, 37779 & 37781.
