Dating back to circa 1900, this fire surround is presented in its original dark stained surface finish. The embellishments across this piece are carved to resemble intricate metalworks. Each jamb is symmetrically topped with a key like carving, with finer details of nails holding them in place.
Above, round and pyramid nails carved into a subtle repeating quartered panel support the mantle. The frieze is a mix of scrolling outward designs also resembling keys, offset with a square and rectangle design of pyramid carvings in high relief. This highly unusual melding of styles is underpinned by a row of repeating wooden ‘nails.’
