About this piece

A 19th century watercolour of the Temple of Olympian Zeus.

This wonderful Grand Tour vista titled on the reverse as ‘On the Appian Way, Rome’ shows the Temple of Olympian Zeus in its ruinous state.

Captured in the early 1800s, this calming scene shows the temple columns as they still remain today. However, the rolling hills and mountains in the distance are not obscured by modern developments.

Presented in a gilt frame with complementary mount, the painting has a broad colourway and pleasing proportions, reminiscent of a time of wonder and discovery.
