About this piece

A large scale 19th century Victorian carved English oak fireplace. Dating to circa 1870 this main room fire surround is profusely carved with exceptional skill. Presented in a high/dark oak finish, this main room feature piece blends Victorian and Georgian styles.

The base of each jamb begins with a lion’s foot atop a ribboned podium. Rich foliage and scrolls pour from the mouths of symmetrical griffons with finely detailed feathered wings. The frieze is centred with a fierce, roaring lion deliberately missing a tooth. Surrounded by flowing scrolls over a Romanesque meander.
