About this piece
back to topA large scale 19th century Victorian carved English oak fireplace. Dating to circa 1870 this main room fire surround is profusely carved with exceptional skill. Presented in a high/dark oak finish, this main room feature piece blends Victorian and Georgian styles.
The base of each jamb begins with a lion’s foot atop a ribboned podium. Rich foliage and scrolls pour from the mouths of symmetrical griffons with finely detailed feathered wings. The frieze is centred with a fierce, roaring lion deliberately missing a tooth. Surrounded by flowing scrolls over a Romanesque meander.
