About this piece

A 19th century grand tour watercolour of the Arch of Titus after Clarkson Frederick Stanfield.

A fascinating scene the Arch of Titus in one of its many states depicted through the years. The artist is unknown.

Created later than Panini’s fanciful capriccio style paintings of the mid 18th century, the arch remains in partial ruin and was not fully restored until 1824.

A circus style tent is erected to the left of the frame, with a violinist and other musicians surrounded by a crowd of seated and standing individuals in period Italian dress.

Unlike the works of Clarkson Frederick Stanfield that fill the sky with dramatic and often ominous clouds, this scene is a gently lit summers day.

Presented in an ivory coloured frame with beaded gilt interior border and complementary mount, the painting has a broad colourway and pleasing proportions, reminiscent of a time of wonder and discovery.
