In this Capriccio style scene, an ornate temple rests on the bank of a lake or river. The temple, accurately depicted in other works of the late 18th century, may have been lost to time or modified beyond recognition.
In the foreground, a childish figure lays across a ruined frieze in the foliage, whilst two character seem to be conferring in front. A bearded figure looks to the viewer as if acknowledging the presence.
The scene is so rich with detail it is likely a scene lost to time with a fictional element to the characters, captured before the protections of the ruined remains came into place, and modern towns surrounded them.
Presented in a gilt frame and a complementary mount.
