back to topA late 19th century French bronzed repousse copper roundel within a wooden simulated marble frame.
This antique plaque is one of four similar we are selling (sold separately), all marked ‘J. B. Germain 1886’, some very near to the edge of the frame. This is in reference to French sculptor, John-Baptiste Germain (1841-1910), who was known for his works in bronze.
Each of the copper plaques depict a neoclassical bacchanalian scene with cherubs and figures, this one drinking wine before a herm statue and possibly featuring the Greek God of Wine himself, Dionysus. Deep and very detailed, the roundel sits within a wooden frame, cleverly painted to simulate Portoro and Connemara marbles with distinctive scalloped edges.
Backed with board and fitted with hook for hanging, this antique French wall plaque will look handsome styled alone or alongside the other three coordinating panels in the set.
