About this piece

A 19th Century European School painting of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice.

Dated to circa 1890, this highly detailed scene captures a narrow view of the interior St. Mark’s Basilica, Venice. The unknown artist captures the western crossarm, showing the arcade that strengthens the vault and the walkways above. This was a later addition to the cathedral which may have inspired the artist to capture such a specific section of the interior.

The painting has been framed in a complementary gilt frame which draws the lavish gold features out of the image.
