About this piece
back to topA 19th Century European School oil on canvas of a coastal scene.
Dated to circa 1890, this vibrant coastline features Cyprus trees and the ruins of a temple. The unknown artist captures the grand tour era of discovery, where these unspoiled ancient ruins could be happened upon before modern interventions.
In the distance a single tree or tower may give clues to the location of the cove. The ruins seem to fall in sections between the trees toward the water with stone structures in the distance.
The canvas is stretched over wood, held into place with copper nails inside a layered gilt frame.
