19th Century Carrara Marble Bas-Relief Plaque of Knight

A 19th century Carrara marble bas-relief plaque of a knight or king.

Skilfully carved with fine details, this unusual piece details a knight above a crown and lion passant. Dated to circa 1800, the bas-relief technique applied to the figure gives a subtle projection whereas the crest is carved in high relief, giving additional depth to the work. 

The unknown tribute is reminiscent of 15th century European carvings, this being most likely a memorial of a warrior or nobleman above a family crest. The specific detail on the face and seemingly crowned helmet would suggest royalty.
