About this piece
back to topA beautiful set of two wooden lion sculptures mounted onto Carrara marble plinths, ready to be placed in an interior as a decorative antique feature. Handsomely carved into oak with a rich, age-old patina, these carved lions date from the late 1800s, made at the hand of a skilled woodworker. Each lion has a characteristic sense of movement, standing in a poised position as if lively or ready to pounce – a stance described as courant in heraldry – among intertwined scrolling foliage, fruiting vines and acanthus leaves. They are of impressive scale, one lion facing left while the other faces right, making for a striking pair on a large sideboard, on columns either side of a large doorway or beside a grand staircase.
