About this piece

A late 19th century framed oil painting on canvas depicting ‘The Bath of Psyche’ after Sir Frederick Leighton. Marked ‘1892’, this antique oil painting by an unknown artist is a scale depiction of Leighton’s larger painting, first exhibited in 1890, which can be found in the Tate Britain.

In this painting, Psyche, the Greek Goddess of the soul, is shown in a pose similar to that of the Venus Callipyge. Partially disrobed, Psyche stands before a tranquil bath with her arm raised above her head, admiring her reflection in the motionless bath water below. The action is thought to reflect her narcissistic character.

This antique oil painting shares a distinctive likeness to the original. The long and narrow canvas is of beautiful proportion for mounting on an interior wall or alcove, bringing fine neoclassical elegance to any space.
