About this piece
back to topSimply detailed, these wrought iron gates are a characterful timepiece for a traditional English style driveway. They are an unequal pair, meeting to one side rather than in the centre, and have a handcrafted misshapen look that adds to their eclectic appeal. Formed in wrought iron, they are strong driveway gates and date back more than 200 years where a talented blacksmith has carefully worked the metal by hand. Detailed with simple scrollwork and arches, you can imagine these unusual driveway gates sitting beautifully at the front of a thatched country cottage or farmhouse.
Wrought Iron Gates
Gates and ironwork made from wrought iron have stood the test of time. This traditional method of craftsmanship sees the metal heated to a high temperature and then hammered into shape by a blacksmith’s hand, creating a robust and durable finish. The more wrought iron is worked, the stronger it becomes, making some of the most ornate antique gates some of the strongest. Large scale commercial production of wrought iron products ended in the mid 1970s due to the expensive and time-consuming nature of blacksmithing, making wrought iron gates true antiques, showcasing talented craftsmanship of the past.
