About this piece
back to topA set of 3 antique buff terracotta statues depicting notable historical English figures possibly by Blanchard. Included in the collection are statues of Francis Drake; 16th century explorer, John Wesley; founder of the Methodist movement and an unknown renaissance figure. We are also selling a larger group of 10 similar figures.
Antiques of English history, these statues date from circa 1880. Each is exquisitely detailed and has a beautiful buff terracotta colour that makes for a striking statement piece in any garden or interior.
These statues are identical to some of those that once resided in the Turkish Baths of London’s Imperial Hotel on Russell Square. The hotel was designed by architect Charles Fitzroy Doll (1850-1929) and demolished in 1966. To this day, the statues still reside on the site of the once hotel, lining the entrance to the underground car-park.
