An early 20th century antique English green glazed lion tile by Maw & Co. dating from circa 1920, ex. Chris Blanchett collection.

Finished in an attractive light green glaze, this large rectangular tile depicts a passant guardant lion in relief with lavish mane and raised curling tail, the details still clear and distinguishable after more than 100 years – a brilliant collector’s piece!

A sticker to the reverse reads ‘Blanchett Collection, Maw 066’.

Maw & Co. Antique Tiles

Maw & Co. was founded in 1850 by George Maw and his brother Arthur. Over the next 30 years, the business would grow into one of the most influential English floor tile manufacturers in the industry, Maw & Co. tiles decorating properties and establishments across the globe.

Initially based in Worcester, the business relocated to the Benthall Works in Broseley, Shropshire in 1852. Here they made their highly sought after encaustic tiles while experimenting with majolica glazes, transfer print, hand painting and relief tiles. In 1883, the business expanded, relocating again to a new premises in Jackfield.

At the end of the 19th century, Maw & Co. was one of the largest tile factories in the world, trading for a further 70 years before closing in 1970.

Chris Blanchett

Collector and specialist in tiles and architectural ceramics, Chris Blanchett started his passion for tiles in the 70s and published books internationally about tiles, mosaics, brick, terracotta and stone.

His name grew more recognised as his career progressed, becoming committee member of the Tiles & Architectural Ceramics Society, honorary Life Member of Tile Heritage Foundation and adviser to the Church Recorders section of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS).

Throughout his career, he acquired various tiles he thought to be impressive, such as this one, to form his stunning collection.
