More on Apophyllite

Apophyllite is the name for a group of phyllosilicate minerals which are very similar in composition and appearance to zeolites, which they are often found with. The Zeolite variety known as Stilbite was named after the Greek word for “shining” or “glittering”.

The shape and layout of apophyllite crystals look like many pyramid-like prisms stacked on top of and around one another. Their structure consists of layers, which give it a pearly sheen and unique shape.

It was first discovered between the 18th and 19th century by French priest and minerologist Rene Just Hauy.

They are often found in the mines of India, as well as Brazil, Italy, Greenland, and Canada. The most sought-after beauties in this group of crystals are said to be the green stones and hail from Poona in India.

The name also refers to a specific group of silicate minerals that make up approximately 90 percent of the earth’s crust.
