About this piece

This large glazed antique tile panel depicts the royal coat of arms for Great Britain.

Dating to circa 1880, this is an impressive decorative piece for a period property, instilling any interior with history and grandeur.

Mounted on a custom steel stand, this deeply cast tile panel showcases bold enamel colours to the crest.

The crest displays the motto Dieu et mon droit, meaning ‘God and my right’, below a lion and unicorn posed to hold up a shield displaying the motto Honi soit qui mal y pense, meaning ‘evil to him who evil thinks’.

The English lion sits to the left while the right is supported by the unicorn of Scotland. The chains on the unicorn represent medieval times when a free unicorn was considered to be a dangerous beast.

The two animals serve as heraldic supports of the royal coat of arms. King James I approved the use of the pair to represent the harmonious and powerful union of England and Scotland, which were once at war.

This panel has remained in beautiful condition displaying this historical crest for over 140 years, now ready to be displayed in its new home for many more.
