About this piece

An impressive wrought iron fire basket with statement cast iron fire dogs with highly decorative Victorian and baroque details. This antique fire basket is huge in scale, once designed to sit within a spectacular fireplace of grand proportions. To find a fire grate this large is a rare find; others of the period are only a fraction of the size of this one!

The grate is simply designed for style and purpose, finished with a black graphite polish and made in a wide basket shape to house the warm embers and heat of the fire. But it is the Victorian fire dogs that are the showpiece of this large fire grate. Cast in iron with a polished patina, the dogs follow a popular Victorian globe design, detailed with flame finials to the top and a grotesque mask to the scrolling feet that give a distinctly baroque look. Together, the fire dogs and basket make for a spectacular fireplace piece that encompasses both function and Victorian beauty.
