About this piece

A large scale, hand-modelled Grand Tour terracotta bust of the ancient Greek poet, Homer. Regarded as one of the greatest literary artists of his time, the legendary author is considered to have penned two of ancient Greece’s most epic poems: the Iliad and the Odyssey.

Sourced from a private UK collection, this antique bust dates from the late 18th century and makers marks remain sculpted into the reverse, showcasing the skill and talent of its creator. Almost 250 years old, this Homer bust is in good condition, details often lost through time such as the nose, wrinkles of the brow and beard still intact and clearly defined.

Elevated by a socle base with square plinth, this bust depicts Homer as he is often captured in sculpture – with curled hair and vacant, sightless eyes (Homer is often thought by historians to have been blind), with drapery around his torso. It will look particularly impactful placed on a plinth or column in a classically inspired interior.
