Carrara Marble Plaque of Arethusa on Stand
An early 20th century Carrara marble plaque depicting a side portrait of the Greek nymph, Arethusa. She is depicted here in Carrara marble, beautifully carved with swirling hair and a seaweed or crab-claw crown among dolphins.
According to Greek Mythology, the nymph Arethusa was companion to the Goddess Artemis. One day, she bathed unknowingly in the river of river-god, Alpheus. He was overcome by her beauty and pursued her. In her desperation, Arethusa fled to Ortygia and prayed to Artemis for help who turned Arethusa into a spring.
Mounted on a custom-made steel stand, this Greek style marble plaque is a superb collector’s item or Art Deco style display piece for a modern or classical style interior.
