About this piece

This antique stone plaque is a fragment from history. With the head of human, the body of a lion and the wings of a falcon, a mythical sphinx has been handsomely preserved for more than 200 years. Intricate details such as the nose, eyes and feet remain relatively unspoiled; a rare find with an object of this age. Carved by hand deep into the stone, the sphinx stands on a decorative twisted edge that suggests that this stone plaque may have been once part of a set. Perhaps it was a tile to embellish a mythical obelisk, a church or an ancient Egyptian tomb. On its own, this antique stone plaque is an object of striking interest for a console or plinth in a property, the preservation of the detail and years of wear telling the story of times gone by. It has been mounted onto a bespoke steel stand.
