Charlemagne Statue
Medieval emperor Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, ruled much of Western Europe from 768 to 814. As King of the Franks (768 – 814), King of the Lombards (774 – 814) and first emperor of the Romans (800 – 814), Charlemagne’s empire encompassed much of Western Europe and presided over the Carolingian Renaissance. Centuries on, Charlemagne is considered by many as the father of Europe.
