About this piece

An early 19th century weathered terracotta architectural plaque in the shape of a shield. This is one of seven similar shield-shaped terracotta plaques  we are selling, usable alone or together as a statement architectural feature.

Beautifully weathered by the exposure to the elements over many years, this antique shield plaque is reminiscent of a castle portcullis with its chequered design – perhaps it was even originally styled with the point at the top, suggestive of an arched castle gate opening!
