About this piece
back to topThis 19th Century large scale English oak inlaid fireplace is a combination of parts dating back to the early 17th Century and possibly earlier.
A distinctive cross through a diamond inlaid on the frieze resembles 16th century apotropaic markings meant to protect and bless the home.
The jambs are deeply reeded and reversed halfway down the column, creating sharp lines that further accentuate the hand carved nature of the frieze.  The opening is softened by two delicately carved scrolls in each corner.
With main room proportions and a combination of styles, this fireplace would suit any period home.
