About this piece
back to topA decorative copper model of an English sailing ship mounted on a wooden display stand dating from the mid 19th century. Once used atop a building as an artistic weathervane, this sailing ship has been repurposed as a piece of historical folk art. Over 150 years of exposure to the elements has instilled it with a well weathered finish, giving it a characterful Verdigris patina throughout – from the tip of the mast to the hull below. It is modelled on a full-rigged Galleon boat, a war sailing ship developed in the 15th and 16th centuries with three masts carrying great sails and a raised stern (rear).
