About this piece
back to topAn antique Georgian garden gate in simple strapwork style. Dating from the 1780s, this wrought iron side gate is more than 240 years old and as such has an aged, timeworn look with bends and warping that tell the story of this 18th century English gate. It is a beautiful addition to a period garden, instilling courtyards and patios with history and character.
Wrought Iron Garden Gates
Gates and ironwork made from wrought iron have stood the test of time. This traditional method of craftsmanship sees the metal heated to a high temperature and then hammered into shape by a blacksmith’s hand, creating a robust and durable finish. The more wrought iron is worked, the stronger it becomes, making some of the most ornate antique gates some of the strongest. Large scale commercial production of wrought iron products ended in the mid 1970s due to the expensive and time-consuming nature of blacksmithing, making wrought iron gates true antiques, showcasing talented craftsmanship of the past.
