About this piece
back to topA fascinating collection of eight natural, prehistoric fossilised trilobite specimens of varying shapes and sizes – the largest measuring 14 x 11 cm (5.51 x 4.33 in). Ex. private collection of David Thomas Turner (1945-2023).
These trilobites are mainly of Welsh origin with the exception of the one which is exposed from its matrix (shown in picture 6) which derives from Morocco. Included are various labels and paper notes detailing the trilobite origins.
Excellent collector’s pieces, each specimen in this group showcases the distinctive scalloped exoskeleton shell of the trilobite; now fossilised.
Over 250 million years old, trilobites first appeared approximately 270 million years earlier during the Cambrian period.
Well-preserved for millions of years, these specimen trilobites offer just a small glimpse into the ancient history of the natural world! Showcasing a range of textures, their natural, stone-like colours tie the group together, making a stunning set for the modern collector.
Provenance
This group is just one of various fossil collections we have for sale previously part of a wider collection collated by David Thomas Turner. Born in East Yorkshire, Turner pursued a career in horticulture and had a keen interest in geology and natural world.
On a visit to Speeton, East Yorkshire in 1973, Turner unearthed his passion for collecting fossils, discovering the first few pieces of his outstanding collection of prehistoric specimens. He later became Fields Visits Secretary for the Essex Rock and Mineral Society, organising trips to geological sites throughout the UK and travelling abroad to explore further discoveries.
